Later That Day.....
As she was getting the keys out of her purse, she yawned and stretched. She could hear music through the door, she was glad that she wouldn’t be waking up Harleen, Harley she would have to remember that. She was relieved that the two of them were night owls. It made being roommates so much easier. Of course, what was also a plus was Harley loved keeping things tidy and in order so since she had more time on her hand their room impeccable.
“Hi Brownie!” Harley chirped, as she came in the door. Rachel noticed her clicking off the TV.
“Hi, Harley.”
Rachel slid out of her heals and slumped into her chair that sat beside her desk.
“Did you have a good day interning?” The girl’s pigtails bounced has she hopped off her bed and sat opposite her at her own desk.
Rachel unknotted the belt that had held her jacket into place. “It wasn’t so bad. We actually got out of office today.” Getting up she hung up her jacket.
“That must have been nice.” Her roommate said brightly.
“Yeah, it was a nice change of pace.” Rachel eyed her roommate, she couldn’t be certain but the girl looked like she was glowing. “Harley is there something on your mind. You seem more chipper than usual?”
“Is it that obvious?” Squealed the girl, giggling she covered her mouth with her hand.
Rachel shook her head her roommate was such a pip. So much better than the last person, she lived her in the dorm, who had been a little too dedicated to plant life. But, with Harley how could anyone not have a smile on their face being around her? “So are you going to tell me?”
“Well, you remember that tall, dark stranger I told you about the other day?” Her blue eyes were shining brightly. “The one I bumped into in joke section of the bookstore?”
Rachel nodded as she turned her back to Harley, as she slipped into a pair of baggy pants and a t-shirt that was three sizes too big for her. It felt good to be in something more comfortable.
“His name is Jack. Oooh.” She squealed. “I just love the sound of it.”
Rachel couldn’t help but chuckle, Harley tended to like the sound of everybody’s name. She went back to sitting in her chair.
“Well, today over hot chocolate he asked me out on a date.” She put a hand to her cheek and bobbed her head from side to side. “Isn’t that great?”
“It is, but isn’t he a bit old?”
“Nah. He’s more mature. Better than the guys we go to class with.” She gave an indifferent jerk of her thumb in the direction of the hallway.
Rachel sighed. “You are right there.” Her phone chimed to life in her purse.
“Don’t you answer it, Rachel. It’s after midnight.” Harley face immediately dropped from it’s elation to one of annoyance. “Anything that is going on at the DA’s office can wait till tomorrow.”
“I have to see who it is though.” She fished her phone out of her purse. “Oh, it’s just a text message, thankfully.”
“What does that Finch want now? I swear it’s like you are working there, not interning.”
Rachel, scrolled the message. “Oh joy.” She sighed. “I have to make a ton of Xeroxes tomorrow. He wants me to come in early.”
“See what I mean. Can’t they get one of the secretaries to do it?”
“I guess not.” She turned off her phone and put it on the charger. “Enough of that.” Rachel went over to her bed, pulled aside the bedclothes, “So are you going to be going out with Mr. Napier than?” Sitting down she leaned over and set her clock for seven in the morning.
“I told him.” Harley yawned, padding over to her bed in her bunny slippers. Kicking her slippers off, she sat down on her bed. “I would go out with him the day after tomorrow.”
“Oh! So you are going to make him wait huh?” Rachel stifled a yawn.
“I figured it couldn’t hurt.” She put on her alarm, and climbed under her blankets. “I also happen to have an exam tomorrow in my evening class. It’s not like I could skip it to see him.
“Ah, I see.” Rachel stretched before switching off the light and getting under her blankets.
In excited voice, “It’s not like that!” she exclaimed from her side of the room.
“Sure it is.” Rachel chuckled from her darkened side.
“Whatever, Brown. You know what this means don’t you?”
“What?”
“We are going to have to find you someone now.”
In the darkness, Rachel rolled her eyes.
“Is there anyone on the horizon?”
An image of the Jim popped in her head that surprised her. “No!” She replied, her voice a touch higher than it had been.
Now, it was Harley who chuckled. “There is someone isn’t there? Why haven’t you told me?”
“Sure you are.” Harley tittered. “Well, good night.”
Rachel yawned. “There is no one. Goodnight.”
“Mmmmhmmm.” All she heard was the ticking of Harley’s clock, and her gentle breathing. She was already fast asleep.
Why am I thinking of Jim, she asked herself. An image of him smiling at her popped in her head. She tried to shake it from her mind’s eye, then she realized why. He’s the first man I’ve interacted with as of late that actually treated her like a human being, not an intern or just a piece of eye candy. He made me laugh. She turned on her side and pulled her pillow in close, and soon gave up to sleep's gentle embrace.
